Abstract: The software services outsourcing industry in India has become a highly visible node of the global economy over the last few years. Often regarded as the leading edge of India’s economic growth during the period of liberalisation and globalisation, it has grown rapidly from small beginnings in the 1980s to generate total export earnings of $22 billion in 2005-06 and over one million jobs.1 IT (information technology) has also become the career option of choice for many young educated Indians, for whom the industry offers salaries unknown in other sectors plus the opportunity to live and work outside of India. Moreover, the success of this industry, together with the recent anti-outsourcing backlash in the U.S., have reinvented India’s global image as a rising economic power, and projected the figure of the Indian ‘techie’ as the highly skilled but low cost global IT professional who is threatening American and European jobs.
