| Abstract: |
The Himalaya has produced several large and great earthquakes during the last two centuries—the 1905 Kangra (Mw 7.8), the 1934 Bihar-Nepal (Mw 8.4), the 1897 Shillong (Mw 8.2, although not a Himalayan earthquake, but one that occurred in the peripheral region), and the 1950 Assam (Mw 8.6), among them. These earthquakes occurred before the advent of modern seismological tools, but they are being revisited, and many insightful accounts of these earthquakes are now available. The 1897 event is discussed for its faulting mechanics, the 1905 Kangra earthquake for its dual-intensity patches, the 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake for its surface rupture, and the 1950 earthquake for its source mechanism. Here we present an overview of these earthquakes and highlight some outstanding questions. |
