Abstract: Indian environmental politics has been vivid and vibrant in articulating voices of women, tribals, poor, marginal, vulnerable, displaced, environmental refugees and migrants. However, there is a relative silence on questions of caste and Dalit positions on ecological politics. Such perspectives, if taken into account, can complicate our understanding of environment, and can bring to light new arenas of dissent and difference. This lecture will underline the interrelationship between caste, nature and Dalits in India by deploying diverse materials from Dalit writings and initiatives, environmental movements and civil society organizations. It will deal with ‘Eco-Casteism’ – the contemporary politics of caste in the realm of nature -- and how we can glean a new ecological universe and a visible Dalit environmental public space, which is often outside the dominant environmental frame.
