| Abstract: |
This case study documents the functioning or rather malfunctioning of a higher primary school in Gundlupet Taluk, Chamarajnagar District and is based on observations made by the field researcher, P. Veerbhadranaika, over a period of twenty months (January 2004 to September 2005). As the case study details, the students' low learning levels are directly attributable to the following factors:
(1)the indifference of many teachers to teaching and learning, resulting in erratic teaching schedules, little attention to teaching quality, and poor treatment
(including beating) of students;(2)poor administration by the head master and local elected members; and (3) politicization of school support programmes. The case study also documents the impact of the District Quality Education Project (DQEP), or Vidyankura. While the project’s activities have led to the successful mobilization of the community, through restructuring and strengthening of the School Monitoring and Development Committee (SMDC), the teachers have not been receptive to the other programmes, especially those relating to improving the learning levels of children. This case study is translated from Kannada and attempts have been made to retain the original idioms and stylistic representation. |
