Abstract: Reusing treated municipal wastewater (TMW) in thermal power plants (TPPs) provides an opportunity to increase the availability of potable water for city dwellers in towns facing acute water shortages by reducing industrial freshwater withdrawal from surface water flows. Despite the possibility of using ~ 20 MLD of TMW in Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) from the Eklaspur Sewage Treatment Plant, its operationalisation is yet to materialise. To understand systemic bottlenecks and explore pathways to facilitate industrial uptake of TMW, NIAS embarked on a methodological study of circularity in the water-stressed town of Raichur. The study focused on developing a knowledge base regarding current sewage water collection and treatment in Raichur town by actively engaging with a Civil Society Organisation (CSO). Further, a detailed mapping of water-related processes was done for RTPS, based on a field visit. Finally, strategies were formulated for the uptake of treated municipal wastewater by thermal power stations and other industries, to enhance the holistic sustainability of the growing towns in the water-stressed regions of India. By providing a data-driven, evidence-based approach to water circularity, key targets of SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) can be realized.
