| Abstract: | The value of the insights gained from the ethnographies would be enhanced if it were clear that they were not exceptions but the rule. This chapter explores the possibility of secondary data confirming the arguments that emerged from the ethnographies. The secondary data did not have the detail to prove the arguments from ethnography in their entirety, but it was possible to test for consistency – that is, to test whether hypotheses that were consistent with the arguments that emerged from the ethnographies were also consistent with available secondary data. If they were not consistent, it could be argued that the ethnographies were exceptional cases. While their being consistent would not prove the arguments from the ethnographies, it would make them more persuasive. The tests showed that the hypotheses that were consistent with the ethnographies were statistically significant. |
