Abstract: The chapter explores the potential and prospects of Japan’s role in the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and the prospect of BIMSTEC-Japan cooperation in the contemporary geopolitical dynamics in the region. Given that Japan is a substantial aid donor and has an enduring relationship with many states in the Bay of Bengal region for quite a long time, it has a greater leverage and potential in contributing to the interest and missions of BIMSTEC. Particularly, when the BIMSTEC, which was started in 1997, presently lacks a credible partner and investor, Japan’s role and its cooperation with BIMSTEC could boost regional connectivity and development. Even though there is a clear predominance of China in the Indo-Pacific, given that India, which is the largest nation in the BIMSTEC, is not willing to work with China on any of their proposed projects, including maritime silk route initiatives, Japan emerges as a better alternative to fit into BIMSTEC agenda as a player with stable financial and technological command. Beyond that, Japan is equally well connected with the BIMSTEC members through its aids and development assistance. Thus, having Tokyo could be win-win cooperation for both Japan and BIMSTEC in the region by facilitating the former by the latter in accelerating the progress.
