Research on the terrorism across the world focus on the definitions of terrorism, the history and culture of terrorism, trends in terrorism, motivations of terrorist groups, conflict situations that provoke terrorist acts, vulnerability and risk assessment, psychological and cognitive models to understand the making of a terrorist and measures to counter terrorism. India has been a victim of some form of terrorism or the other since independence. It has been reported that for the most frequently attacked countries and third in terms of fatalities. In spite of this, there has not been any effort to look at the problem quantitatively or make a quantitative assessment of the problem. The effort by Piazza is probably one of the few that has attempted to look at the problem of terrorism in India analytically. He has shown the terrorism is not necessarily due to poor economic development but is an outcome of unresolved and poorly managed political conflicts. Piazza's analysis however does not distinguish between terrorism and insurgencies. |
