Abstract: All of us thought this would be his swansong. Only a few of us could actually believe it was the man himself, in the flesh, at the piano, but very evidently his fingers did not cooperate with his mind. As a 17-year-old, I was completely confused throughout that experience. I knew him as a celebrated physicist, a parliamentarian and an exponent of the music of Franz Liszt, and it was common to see grainy newspaper photographs of him at the piano. If you were raised in Bangalore, you always heard about Raja Ramanna (RR). But it was for the first time that I had actually heard him play, while I was sitting in the first violin section of the Bangalore School of Music (BSM) Orchestra, accompanying him to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto 3 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall at the end of January 2000. We must be honest – it didn’t go well, but we still made a beeline to shake his hand and claim in our circles that we had met Raja Ramanna the musician.…
