| Abstract: | Renowned anthropologist Veena Das’s book, Slum Acts, works at multiple levels—at once a treatise on the philosophy of knowledge, a reflection on methods, a critique of the foundational principles on which the state stands, that is, its claim to legitimate violence, and finally an inspiring reflection on the social context of violence. The book’s broadest framing is the connection between global terror and local, institutionalised torture. The events which provide the starting point to this book are the 1993 bomb attacks and the train bomb blasts in Mumbai in 2006 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station. Das also draws from her many years of ethnographic work in slums in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). |
