| Abstract: |
The Srirangapatna Fort, built in 1454 CE and expanded by rulers like Tipu Sultan, is famed for its robust defensive architecture, featuring double-enclosure walls, bastions, gates, and cannon stands, underscoring its historical significance. The fort holds immense historical significance as the site of pivotal events, including the Siege of Srirangapatna during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. Among the four Anglo-Mysore wars, the fourth was devastating, resulting in the siege that led to the fall of Tipu Sultan. This conflict resulted in the destruction of many structures within the fort and significant changes to its landscape. This study employs geospatial technology to analyze the structural remains of Srirangapatna Fort, comparing its state from 1800 to 2021. The project involved generating a high-resolution orthophoto by scanning a to-scale Tabletop model of the fort, which was surveyed and prepared by Major General Ross in 1800 at a scale of one inch to 100 feet, using a digital camera. The orthophoto was georeferenced using Ground Control Points (GCPs) derived from satellite imagery and collected on-site using a hand-held satellite navigation device. Analysis conducted in QGIS software included identifying, digitizing, and mapping fort features, providing a comprehensive view of the fort’s morphological changes due to historical events. This research highlights the transformative power of GIS and remote sensing in archaeological studies and underscores their importance in understanding cultural heritage. The findings offer a valuable dataset for future excavation and conservation efforts, bridging the gap between technological advancements and the preservation of our heritage. |
