Abstract: The paper uncovers different forms of patriarchy as experienced by Indian woman at various stages of her life. It argues the ultimate effect of sustained and extreme discrimination is differential mortality rates, which get reflected in changing sex-ratios. It identifies specific stages pointing to distinct phases of gender relations.
